Youth with Problematic Sexual Behavior

Curiosity about bodies and relationships is a normal part of growing up. As children and adolescents develop, they learn about boundaries, consent, and social expectations through guidance from caregivers, peers, and their communities.

At times, however, sexual behaviors may signal deeper concerns. When behaviors are developmentally inappropriate, harmful, or involve coercion, they can affect the safety and well-being of the young person and others around them. These situations require thoughtful, informed responses, not blame or fear.

Research shows that early, evidence-based intervention is highly effective. When youth receive timely support, the risk of continued harm or future involvement in the justice system is significantly reduced. With the right guidance, most young people can build healthy coping skills, learn appropriate boundaries, and move forward in positive ways.

The most effective responses focus on family-centered and community-based approaches, recognizing that youth do best when caregivers, schools, and professionals work together. This section offers resources to help parents, caregivers, and professionals understand problematic sexual behavior and respond in ways that prioritize safety, accountability, and long-term healing for everyone involved.
